Astronomical Price Hike: Pilots Protest Starlink’s Aviation Service Changes
Over 9,000 general aviation pilots have signed a petition protesting SpaceX’s Starlink after the company imposed dramatic price increases and speed restrictions on its satellite internet service for aircraft users.
In early March 2026, Starlink capped its standard Roam and Priority plans at just 100 mph ground speed—slower than most aircraft cruise speeds. Pilots wanting in-flight connectivity above that threshold must now subscribe to aviation-specific tiers starting at $250 per month for 300 mph service (with only 20 GB of data) or $1,000 monthly for 450 mph service. Previously, pilots paid around $50-$165 per month for plans with significantly more data.
“This was a bait and switch,” wrote petition signers who had invested in Starlink Mini hardware. The Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA) sent a formal letter to Elon Musk on March 9, 2026, requesting the company reconsider its pricing. AOPA Senior Vice President Jim Coon called the changes “unfortunate” and predicted “large numbers of subscription cancellations and less revenue for the company.”
Many pilots had integrated Starlink into their operations for real-time weather updates, flight planning, and safety communications. The controversy highlights the growing importance—and cost challenges—of cockpit connectivity for general aviation.
