Major Leadership Shakeup at OpenAI: Three Top Executives Depart

OpenAI, on Friday, April 17, 2026, announced a significant leadership shakeup with the departure of three senior executives. This move is part of a broader restructuring effort aimed at focusing on core products and enterprise AI. The executives leaving the company are Kevin Weil, former Chief Product Officer; Bill Peebles, head of the Sora AI video team; and Srinivas Narayanan, Chief Technology Officer of B2B Applications.

Kevin Weil, who joined OpenAI nearly two years ago from Instagram, spearheaded the development of GPT-Rosalind, a life sciences and drug discovery model. This model was released just a day before his departure. His division, OpenAI for Science, will now merge with other research teams as part of the company’s consolidation strategy.

Bill Peebles departs in the wake of OpenAI’s decision to shut down the Sora video generation app last month. The shutdown was due to high compute costs, estimated at a staggering $1 million per day.

The company is now pivoting away from what the leadership has termed as “side quests” to concentrate on enterprise AI and its forthcoming super app. This strategic shift follows earlier leadership changes, including Brad Lightcap’s transition to special projects and medical leaves taken by product chief Fidji Simo and marketing chief Kate Rouch.

These departures add to the growing trend of leadership attrition at OpenAI, leaving only 2 of the company’s 11 original co-founders. The restructuring signifies OpenAI’s strategic shift as it gears up for a potential IPO, amidst intensifying competition from Anthropic, Google, and Meta in the enterprise AI market. Despite these changes, OpenAI maintains a robust $25 billion in annualized revenue, although it faces projected losses of $14 billion.
