Meta Increases Quest VR Prices Amid AI Chip Shortage
On April 16, 2026, Meta announced a significant price increase for its Quest VR headsets. The change, effective from April 19, is due to the escalating costs of memory chips, a result of the increased demand from AI data centers.
The entry-level Quest 3S (128GB) will see a price jump from $299.99 to $349.99. The Quest 3S (256GB) will increase from $399.99 to $449.99. The most significant increase will be for the higher-end Quest 3 (512GB), which will rise from $499.99 to $599.99.
Meta attributes these price hikes to a global surge in the cost of critical components. Specifically, memory chips are being consumed in massive quantities by AI companies like OpenAI, Google, and Microsoft for data center buildouts. The company stated, “the cost of building high-performance VR hardware has risen significantly,” and the shortage is “impacting almost every category of consumer electronics, including VR.”
These price increases mirror similar moves by other tech companies. Sony recently raised PlayStation 5 prices, while Dell, HP, and Microsoft are all grappling with the same supply chain pressures. This move highlights the collateral impact of the AI boom on consumer hardware. The race among Big Tech to build AI infrastructure is creating shortages that affect other product lines.
The price adjustment comes at a time when Meta has been scaling back its metaverse ambitions. The company has laid off 10% of its Reality Labs division employees since January 2026. Despite the price increase and organizational changes, Meta reiterates its commitment to VR. The company has confirmed it continues to develop future Quest headsets.
