Stanford Unveils ‘Natural Ozempic’ for Weight Loss Without Adverse Effects

Researchers at Stanford Medicine have made a monumental discovery of a naturally occurring molecule that holds the potential to transform weight loss treatments. This peptide, named BRP (derived from BRINP2), mirrors the appetite-suppressing effects of renowned drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy, but without the common side effects such as nausea, constipation, and muscle loss.

With the aid of artificial intelligence in sifting through prohormones, the research team pinpointed this 12-amino-acid peptide. It seems to act specifically on the hypothalamus, the brain’s control center for appetite and metabolism. In animal studies, BRP demonstrated a reduction in appetite and body weight, while circumventing several common side effects linked with semaglutide-based medications.

“The receptors targeted by semaglutide are found in the brain but also in the gut, pancreas and other tissues,” elucidated Dr. Katrin Svensson, assistant professor of pathology at Stanford Medicine and senior author of the study published in Nature. In contrast, BRP seems to operate through a more targeted mechanism, potentially offering a more precise approach to weight management.

The research team has co-founded a company with plans to initiate human clinical trials in the near future. This marks a significant stride towards developing this natural alternative for obesity treatment.
