United Airlines Increases Baggage Fees Amid Rising Fuel Costs
United Airlines has announced a $10 increase in its checked baggage fees, effective for tickets purchased from Friday, April 3, 2026. This decision comes as the airline industry battles with skyrocketing jet fuel costs, a consequence of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
The first checked bag will now cost $45 for the majority of domestic flights within the United States, Mexico, Canada, and Latin America, provided travelers pay in advance. However, this fee rises to $50 if payment is made within 24 hours of departure. A second checked bag will now cost $55. This is the first time United has increased its baggage fees in two years.
These price hikes are a direct result of jet fuel costs nearly doubling since the war began in late February 2026. The average price for a gallon of jet fuel in major hubs such as Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, and New York hit $4.88 on Thursday, a significant increase from the pre-conflict price of $2.50, according to Argus Media. United CEO Scott Kirby has informed investors that these rising fuel costs have already added an estimated $400 million to the airline’s operating expenses. This is a trend mirrored by Delta Air Lines and American Airlines, who report similar figures.
The disruption in the industry is largely due to severe impacts on global oil supplies near the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route through which approximately one-fifth of the world’s oil typically passes. Industry experts predict that U.S. airlines will continue to offset higher fuel costs by increasing add-on fees and ticket prices in the upcoming months.
