SMFL Helicopters: A New Force in Global Rotorcraft Leasing
A new major player has emerged in the helicopter leasing industry with the launch of SMFL Helicopters (SMFLH). Formed through the merger of two established rotorcraft lessors, the company officially began operations on March 2, 2026, positioning itself to become a market leader in the global helicopter leasing sector.
SMFL Helicopters was created by Sumitomo Mitsui Finance and Leasing Company (SMFL) through the acquisition of LCI Helicopters and Macquarie Rotorcraft Limited. The new lessor operates a fleet of approximately 290 aircraft across six continents, serving 52 operators worldwide in mission-critical operations including:
- Emergency Medical Services (EMS)
- Offshore Energy
- Search and Rescue (SAR)
- Utility Missions
The fleet includes latest-generation helicopters from manufacturers such as Airbus and Leonardo. SMFL had previously signed a firm order for 14 Airbus helicopters in 2024, including H145s, H160s, and H175s, to be delivered through 2028.
John Petkovic, previously CEO of Macquarie Rotorcraft, has been appointed CEO Designate of SMFLH and is expected to formally assume the role later in 2026 following completion of protocols and his relocation to Dublin. Crispin Maunder has been named Chairman, with headquarters established in Dublin, Ireland, and offices in Limerick, London, and Singapore.
The launch follows regulatory approval from the UK Competition and Markets Authority in November 2025. SMFL aims to leverage technical expertise, financial strength, and operational depth to deliver flexible financing solutions for the growing rotorcraft market.
