Apple’s Second-Largest Acquisition: Israeli AI Startup Q.ai

Apple has confirmed its acquisition of Q.ai, an Israeli artificial intelligence startup, in a deal worth approximately $2 billion. This makes it the company’s second-largest acquisition ever, following the $3 billion Beats purchase in 2014.

The secretive startup, led by CEO Aviad Maizels—who previously sold PrimeSense to Apple in 2013—has been developing innovative AI technology for audio and communication experiences. Reports suggest that Q.ai’s patents reveal technology that uses facial skin micro-movements to enable communication without talking. This technology could potentially be integrated into headphones or smart glasses.

“Q.ai is a remarkable company that is pioneering new and creative ways to use imaging and machine learning,” said Johny Srouji, Apple’s senior vice president of hardware technologies.

The acquisition comes as Apple seeks to strengthen its position in the competitive AI landscape. The technology from Q.ai could potentially enhance products like AirPods, Vision Pro headsets, and the Siri assistant.

This deal marks a significant move for Apple as it ramps up AI capabilities across its ecosystem. This follows recent partnerships with Google for Gemini integration and ongoing development of Apple Intelligence features.
