Zeaxanthin: An Eye Supplement with Potential Cancer-Fighting Properties

Researchers at the University of Chicago have made a groundbreaking discovery: zeaxanthin, a carotenoid supplement typically used to support eye health, may also enhance cancer-fighting immune cells. This revelation, published in Cell Reports Medicine on October 1, 2025, suggests that zeaxanthin could potentially enhance the effectiveness of immunotherapy treatments.

The research team discovered that zeaxanthin fortifies T-cell receptors and boosts immune signaling, thereby enhancing the tumor-destroying power of CD8+ T cells. “We were surprised to find that zeaxanthin, already known for its role in eye health, has a completely new function in boosting anti-tumor immunity,” said lead researcher Dr. Jing Chen, Janet Davison Rowley Distinguished Service Professor of Medicine.

Zeaxanthin is naturally present in vegetables such as orange peppers, spinach, and kale. It is also widely available as an over-the-counter supplement. Given its established safety profile and accessibility, zeaxanthin is an attractive candidate for clinical trials as a supplement to existing cancer treatments.

The study underscores the importance of balanced nutrition. Researchers have previously discovered that nutrients from both plant and animal sources may offer complementary immune health benefits. However, the researchers stress that while these findings are promising, they are mostly based on laboratory experiments and animal studies. Human trials are still necessary.
