Record Highs for Stock Markets as S&P 500 Soars Beyond 6,200
U.S. stock markets closed at record highs on Thursday, with the S&P 500 gaining 0.83% to close at 6,279.35 and the Nasdaq Composite rising 1.02% to 20,601.10. The Dow Jones Industrial Average added 344 points or 0.77% to finish at 44,828.53, extending the rally that has driven major indexes back to all-time levels.
The market surge came after a stronger-than-expected jobs report showed U.S. employers added 147,000 jobs in June, exceeding the 110,000 economists had forecast, while the unemployment rate dropped to 4.1% from 4.2%. The robust employment data reinforced confidence in the economy’s resilience despite ongoing trade policy uncertainties and geopolitical concerns.
Both the S&P 500 and Nasdaq have now closed at record highs on four of the past five trading days. For the shortened holiday week, all three major indexes posted gains, with the S&P 500 up 1.7%, the Nasdaq gaining 1.6%, and the Dow advancing 2.3%. The rally has been fueled by optimism about potential trade deals and continued strength in corporate earnings, with markets preparing for the start of earnings season later this month.
