FAA Approves Garmin’s GHA 15 Radar Altimeter for Over 500 Aircraft Models
Aviation technology pioneer, Garmin, has been granted the FAA Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) for its groundbreaking GHA 15 height advisor. This marks a substantial progression in the field of general aviation safety equipment. The announcement was made on February 4, 2026.
Formerly approved solely for experimental aircraft, the GHA 15 has now received certification for installation in over 500 certified Class I and II aircraft. This compact, lightweight system employs cutting-edge radar technology to deliver precise height above ground level (AGL) information. This is a crucial safety feature, particularly valuable during approaches, low-altitude operations, and flights over water or challenging terrain.
The GHA 15 calculates height by emitting radio waves to the ground and measuring the return time. It processes hundreds of measurements per second using advanced digital filters to maintain continuous, accurate readings up to 500 feet AGL. The system displays data on compatible GI 275 electronic flight instruments and provides configurable audio callouts from 300 feet down to just 1 foot above the ground.
Weighing less than one pound and only slightly larger than a deck of cards, the self-contained module mounts to the aircraft’s underside, requiring minimal modification for installation. This is the first certified radar altimetry system available for general aviation aircraft in several years. The GHA 15 is available now at a suggested retail price of $2,695.
