Financial Screening for Tourists in Bali from 2026: A Shift towards Quality Tourism
Bali is gearing up to enforce stringent financial verification prerequisites for foreign tourists from 2026. This major shift towards “quality tourism” is aimed at prioritizing the quality of visitors over their quantity. Governor Wayan Koster revealed that international visitors might have to present proof of sufficient funds, including bank statements from the preceding three months, to gain entry to the Indonesian island.
The proposed policy, which could come into effect as early as March 2026 subject to legislative approval, would necessitate tourists to prove financial capacity in accordance with their length of stay and travel plans. In addition, visitors would be required to furnish confirmed accommodation details and return tickets.
This initiative follows a record-breaking 7.05 million foreign tourist arrivals in Bali in 2025, the highest in the island’s history.
“It is crucial to ascertain which foreign tourists are permitted to enter and which are not, so that visitors contribute positively, particularly to the tourism sector, and do not cause problems,” Koster stated. The government’s objective is to prioritize quality over quantity through enhanced regulations and tourism governance.
Although the exact minimum balance required has not been specified, officials have hinted that assessments would be conducted on a case-by-case basis. This policy is a response to concerns about visitors overstaying visas, working illegally, or engaging in behavior that has put pressure on infrastructure and tested local tolerance. Industry observers have noted that the stricter requirements could significantly affect budget travelers and digital nomads, thereby reshaping Bali’s tourism landscape.
