World’s Longest Cable Car Set to Revolutionize Tourism in Dominica by 2026
Dominica is poised to revolutionize Caribbean tourism with the unveiling of the world’s longest cable car system in 2026. This ambitious 6.6-kilometer (4.1-mile) project will transform the way visitors access the island’s iconic Boiling Lake, cutting down the grueling 6-8 hour hike to a mere 20-minute journey.
The cable car, a collaboration between Austria’s Doppelmayr Group and Outdoor Engineers AG, will ferry visitors over untouched rainforests, river gorges, waterfalls, and hot springs nestled within the Morne Trois Pitons National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. According to Tourism Minister Denise Charles, the project is slated for completion by February or March 2026.
The system will feature stations at both the bottom and top, equipped with amenities such as restaurants, food courts, kiosks, and panoramic viewing areas for an enhanced visitor experience.
With an investment of US$54 million, this venture is projected to triple Dominica’s tourism numbers, making the world’s second-largest boiling lake accessible to those who are physically unable to undertake the challenging hike. The cable car will be partially powered by geothermal energy, aligning with Dominica’s vision of becoming the world’s first climate-resilient nation by 2030. Upon completion, it will surpass the current record holder in Vietnam, which spans 5.8 kilometers.
