BYD Dethrones Tesla as the Leading EV Manufacturer in 2025
In a historic turn of events, Chinese electric vehicle titan, BYD, sold a staggering 4.6 million vehicles in 2025. This achievement propelled them past Tesla, marking their debut as the world’s largest electric vehicle manufacturer. The company set a new global record by selling 2.26 million pure electric vehicles in the same year.
This shift in the global EV market dynamics saw BYD’s sales surge by 7.7% from 2024, hitting its revised full-year target amidst a challenging market environment. Although Tesla is yet to announce its final 2025 sales figures, market analysts predict that the Texas-based company will not match BYD’s impressive numbers, having reported 1.22 million EV sales through September.
BYD’s triumph is largely attributed to its aggressive expansion into international markets, including Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Europe. Despite facing hefty tariffs in the United States, the Shenzhen-based automaker, established in 1995 as a battery manufacturer, has managed to dominate China’s fiercely competitive new energy vehicle market, which is the largest in the world.
