Unprecedented Surge in Holiday Travel: A Record 122M Americans Set to Journey
The United States braces for an unprecedented surge in holiday travel. An estimated 122.4 million Americans are projected to travel between December 20, 2024, and January 1, 2025. This marks a new record for the tourism industry.
The American Automobile Association (AAA) reports that this represents a 2.2% increase over 2024’s already record-breaking holiday travel figures. Road travel is set to dominate, with 109.5 million people expected to drive. Additionally, over 8 million Americans are projected to take domestic flights—a 2.3% increase from the previous year. This surge is fueling significant economic growth across accommodation, retail, and transportation sectors nationwide.
However, travelers should prepare for challenges. Major highways and regional routes are expected to see heavy congestion, particularly on peak days like December 23 and December 30. Domestic flight prices have also increased by 7% compared to last year, according to AAA.
Despite these challenges, the record-breaking forecast signals continued strength in the U.S. tourism sector. Warm destinations like Florida, Southern California, Hawaii, and Caribbean resort towns are dominating traveler preferences. Tourism boards across the country are emphasizing sustainable tourism practices to balance economic benefits with environmental and community impacts.
