Unveiling the First-Ever Advanced Air Mobility National Strategy in the US
On the 122nd anniversary of the Wright Brothers’ first flight, U.S. Transportation Secretary, Sean P. Duffy, revealed the nation’s inaugural Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) National Strategy. This comprehensive plan, unveiled on December 17, 2025, presents 40 recommendations to facilitate the safe and efficient integration of electric air taxis and autonomous aircraft into American airspace.
The strategy was crafted by a 19-agency interagency working group, mandated by Congress. It zeroes in on six pivotal pillars:
- Airspace integration
- Infrastructure development
- Security
- Community engagement
- Workforce expansion
- Automation
According to the plan, demonstration flights and initial operations for contemporary AAM aircraft are projected to commence by 2027. This will leverage existing aviation infrastructure while fostering the development of new vertiport facilities.
Major industry players, including Archer Aviation, Joby Aviation, BETA Technologies, and Wisk Aero, have expressed robust support for the initiative. The strategy’s primary objective is to establish the United States as a global leader in advanced air mobility. It aims to create high-skilled jobs and transform transportation options for communities lacking commercial airline services.
Industry associations such as GAMA and NBAA have lauded the collaborative approach. This approach ensures federal efforts are coordinated across the Department of Transportation, FAA, Department of Homeland Security, and NASA.
