Louvre Museum Increases Ticket Prices by 45% for Non-EU Visitors Following Heist

Paris’s renowned Louvre Museum has announced a substantial 45% ticket price increase for visitors from non-European Union countries. This change will be effective from January 14, 2025. Consequently, tourists from the United States, Britain, China, and other non-EU countries will now be charged €32 ($37) per ticket, a significant increase from the previous €22 ($25).

This price hike comes in the wake of a daring daylight theft that took place in October. Thieves managed to steal a staggering $102 million worth of crown jewels in a mere seven minutes, revealing serious security flaws. The museum anticipates raising between €15-20 million annually through this price increase, which will be directed towards urgent infrastructure upgrades and security enhancements.

In 2024, the Louvre welcomed a whopping 8.7 million visitors, 77% of whom were foreign tourists. The largest group of visitors was Americans, making up 13% of the total, followed by Chinese visitors who accounted for 6%. Despite being designed to accommodate 4 million visitors annually, the museum consistently sees more than double that number, leading to overcrowding and structural stress.
