New $45 Fee for Travelers Without Real ID to be Implemented by TSA in 2026

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has announced a new $45 fee for travelers lacking Real ID-compliant identification. This change is set to take effect from February 1, 2026, marking a significant increase from the initially proposed $18 fee.

Travelers without an acceptable form of ID will be required to use the new TSA ConfirmID system. This system grants 10 days of airport access after successful verification. The verification process may take between 10 to 30 minutes and can be paid for online in advance or at airport kiosks.

At present, 94% of travelers already possess compliant identification. This implies that the new fee will impact approximately 6% of passengers.

“Identity verification is essential to traveler safety, as it keeps terrorists, criminals, and illegal aliens out of the skies,” stated TSA Senior Official Adam Stahl. “The fee ensures verification costs are borne by travelers rather than taxpayers.”

TSA strongly encourages passengers to obtain a Real ID or other acceptable forms of identification such as passports or Global Entry cards. This is to avoid potential delays and additional costs.
