Red Arrows Set World-First Milestone with 100% Sustainable Fuel Aerobatic Display at RIAT 2025

The Royal Air Force Red Arrows achieved a world-first milestone by performing their aerobatic display using 100% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) at the 2025 Royal International Air Tattoo (RIAT), taking place July 18-20 at RAF Fairford.

This groundbreaking achievement marks the first time any national aerobatic team has flown their entire display routine on sustainable fuel. The iconic formation team not only used SAF for jet propulsion but also employed a renewable biofuel called Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) to create their signature vapor trails.

The Red Arrows’ sustainable fuel display follows their successful SAF-powered flypast over London in June for HM King Charles. Squadron Leader Jon Bond, Team Leader and Red 1, emphasized the historic significance of performing at RIAT, where the team has deep heritage having been originally based at RAF Fairford in their earliest days until 1966.

RAF’s Commitment to Sustainable Aviation

The RAF has been trialing SAF since 2020 across various aircraft including Typhoon fighters, P-8 Poseidon aircraft, and C-130 transports. A 100% sustainable fuel flight was achieved in November 2022 using an A330 Voyager from RAF Brize Norton, demonstrating the service’s commitment to reducing environmental impact while maintaining operational capabilities.
