Pipistrel’s Electric Aircraft Earns Canadian Certification for Flight Training
Transport Canada has validated the type certificates for Pipistrel’s revolutionary Velis Electro, Explorer, and Velis Club aircraft. This marks a significant milestone for sustainable aviation in North America. The Velis Electro, recognized as the world’s first fully type-certified electric aircraft, can now be legally operated by Canadian flight schools and private operators for training purposes.
The all-electric Velis Electro produces zero emissions during flight while operating at just 60 decibels. This makes it significantly quieter than traditional training aircraft. Gabriel Massey, President of Pipistrel, stated, “This validation not only strengthens our position in the Canadian market, but also significantly enhances flight training capabilities across the country.” The aircraft achieved EASA type certification in 2020, UK CAA certification in 2022, and received an FAA exemption in 2024.
The certification follows successful testing by the Waterloo Institute for Sustainable Aeronautics. The institute has been operating the aircraft since 2022 for research into battery-powered flight operations. With its 88-knot cruise speed and 56-minute flight endurance, the Velis Electro offers flight schools a cost-effective, environmentally friendly training platform. This could revolutionize pilot education.
