OpenAI Unveils Sora AI Video App for Global Android Users
OpenAI has broadened the reach of its revolutionary Sora AI video generation app to Android devices as of November 4, 2025. This marks a significant step towards making AI-powered video creation accessible to millions of new users. The app is now available in seven key markets including the United States, Canada, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam.
Sora empowers users to create AI-generated videos up to 60 seconds long using simple text prompts or existing images. The Android launch follows the remarkable success of the iOS version, which achieved over 1 million downloads within just five days of its release in September. Early data indicates that the Android version recorded approximately 470,000 downloads on its first day alone.
The app boasts a unique “Cameos” feature that enables users to insert themselves or friends into AI-generated videos. It also offers community sharing capabilities akin to popular platforms like TikTok or Instagram. OpenAI has strategically positioned Sora as a competitor to established short-form video platforms, while also introducing stricter safety filters to prevent deepfake abuse.
For a limited time, users in supported regions can access Sora without the need for invitation codes, thereby eliminating the previous waitlist requirement. This expansion signifies OpenAI’s strategic push into Asia-Pacific markets, where mobile video consumption is particularly high among younger demographics.
