FAA’s MOSAIC Rule: A Revolutionary Leap in Light Sport Aviation
The Federal Aviation Administration has recently finalized its groundbreaking MOSAIC (Modernization of Special Airworthiness Certification) rule. This represents the most significant update to light sport aviation since 2004, dramatically expanding the types of aircraft that can be certified as Light Sport Aircraft and the range of aircraft that Sport Pilots can fly.
Under the new regulations, the previous 1,320-pound weight limit has been completely abolished. It has been replaced by performance-based criteria that allow aircraft weighing up to approximately 3,000 pounds. Furthermore, the rule permits Light Sport Aircraft to feature up to four seats, retractable landing gear, constant-speed propellers, and alternative propulsion systems, including electric power.
Sport Pilots also stand to gain significant new privileges. These include:
- The ability to fly at night with proper training and endorsements
- Operate more complex aircraft, including helicopters
- Engage in limited commercial activities such as infrastructure inspection and aerial photography
The changes to pilot privileges come into effect on October 22, 2025, while the changes to aircraft certification become effective on July 24, 2026.
