Skyfly’s Axe VCA Earns FAA Experimental Permit for US Flight Testing

British company Skyfly has reached a significant milestone with its prototype Axe Vertically Capable Aircraft (VCA) receiving an FAA Experimental certificate. This achievement paves the way for the commencement of piloted flight testing in the United States.

The two-seat electric aircraft, registered as N250EV, will remain in the US for continued development after its successful debut at EAA AirVenture in July 2025. The Axe VCA boasts unique capabilities as both a helicopter and airplane, offering a fully electric range of 100 miles or an extended 300 miles with a hybrid option.

The aircraft is equipped with eight brushless motors for redundancy and advanced safety systems. By shifting testing to the US, Skyfly can continue development throughout the winter months, taking advantage of more stable weather conditions.

“Receiving FAA Experimental authorization is a major milestone for Skyfly,” said CEO Michael Thompson. “It allows us to move forward with piloted flight testing under the world’s most respected aviation regulator.”

The timing of this development aligns with the FAA’s new MOSAIC rules. These regulations will permit eVTOL aircraft like the Axe to be certified as Light Sport Aircraft, thereby enabling sport pilots to operate them. Skyfly has planned customer demonstrations for early 2026.
