Verizon and AST SpaceMobile Collaborate for Space-Based Cellular Service
AST SpaceMobile has unveiled a definitive commercial agreement with Verizon to provide direct-to-cellular service from space, set to launch in 2026. This announcement led to an over 8% surge in AST shares, adding to the already impressive 250% gain in 2025.
The partnership aims to extend Verizon’s 850 MHz premium low-band spectrum into remote areas of the United States. This will be achieved through AST’s innovative space-based cellular broadband network. The service is designed to provide seamless connectivity in traditionally hard-to-reach locations. This is made possible by integrating Verizon’s terrestrial network with satellites in low Earth orbit, capable of connecting directly to unmodified smartphones.
This deal builds upon a strategic partnership announced in early 2024, when Verizon pledged a $100 million commitment to support AST’s service rollout. The companies have already conducted successful trials, including voice calls, video calls, and two-way messaging through AST’s BlueBird satellites.
AST SpaceMobile is in a race to deploy its satellite constellation as competition heats up with SpaceX’s Starlink and T-Mobile partnership in the burgeoning space-to-cellular market.
