A New Chapter in General Aviation: FAA’s Sport Pilot 2.0 Effective from October 22
As we approach a significant milestone in general aviation, the FAA’s Sport Pilot 2.0 regulations are set to take effect on October 22, 2025. This change is part of the Modernization of Special Airworthiness Certification (MOSAIC) final rule, promising to revolutionize recreational aviation access and training opportunities.
The new regulations will empower over 7,000 sport pilot certificate holders with the ability to fly a vastly expanded range of aircraft. They will no longer be limited to light-sport aircraft under 1,320 pounds with two seats. Private pilots and above can now exercise sport pilot privileges in any aircraft with a clean stall speed of 59 knots or less, up to 4 seats, carrying one passenger, using a driver’s license instead of a medical certificate.
According to the EAA, “These changes mean that most flight schools and flight instructors now have access to aircraft that make training sport pilots a viable option“. This expansion opens new marketing opportunities for aviation beyond commercial careers, highlighting recreational aspects while utilizing existing training aircraft.
