Revolutionary MOSAIC Rules Commence on October 22, Broadening Sport Pilot Access

The FAA’s groundbreaking MOSAIC (Modernization of Special Airworthiness Certification) rule is set to take effect on October 22, 2025. This revolutionary rule will dramatically expand the range of aircraft that sport pilots can operate.

The new regulations will eliminate the existing 1,320-pound weight limit for Light Sport Aircraft. Instead, the rule will introduce performance-based criteria, with a maximum stall speed of 59 knots. This significant transformation, often referred to as “Sport Pilot 2.0”, implies that approximately three-quarters of the general aviation fleet will become accessible to sport pilots.

Popular aircraft models such as the Cessna 150, 152, 172, and many Piper models will now be within reach of sport pilots. Additionally, the rule will permit Light Sport Aircraft to have up to four seats and operate at speeds up to 250 knots.

“This is a huge win that will fundamentally transform general aviation,” said one industry advocate.

The changes will enable sport pilots to fly larger, more capable aircraft using only a driver’s license as their medical certificate for daytime operations. This significantly lowers the barriers to entry in aviation.
