Orlando International Airport: A Pioneer in eVTOL Integration with FAA Assessment

Orlando International Airport (MCO) has successfully concluded an innovative three-day Advanced Air Mobility assessment in collaboration with the FAA. This makes it the second U.S. airport to participate in such comprehensive eVTOL integration testing. The simulation was designed to explore how electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft could function within the National Airspace System.

The assessment made use of Human-in-the-Loop modeling at the FAA’s William J. Hughes Technical Center in New Jersey. Here, Orlando-based air traffic controllers tested integration scenarios in cutting-edge simulated tower environments. The exercise delved into potential routes and procedures for eVTOL operations in the vicinity of one of the nation’s busiest airports.

“This assessment is a testament to our commitment to spearhead the next phase of flight,” stated Lance Lyttle, CEO of the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority. MCO has pinpointed two potential sites for future air taxi vertiports and is utilizing its 11,000+ acres to position Florida at the forefront of advanced air mobility adoption.
