UK Health Regulator Targets Illegal Botox Following Serious Botulism Outbreak
The UK’s medicines watchdog has initiated criminal investigations in response to a severe botulism outbreak. This outbreak is linked to unlicensed Botox treatments across England. Between June 4 and August 6, 2025, health authorities confirmed 41 cases of iatrogenic botulism – a rare but potentially life-threatening condition causing paralysis.
The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) disclosed that 32 patients required hospitalization, with 8 needing intensive care treatment. Investigations suggest the outbreak stems from unlicensed botulinum toxin products. Many of these products originate from South Korea and are administered in unsafe settings. These include domestic kitchens, hair salons, and mobile beauty services.
‘No one should have to suffer serious illness or risk their life because criminals are flooding the market with unsafe products,’ cautioned Health Minister Stephen Kinnock. The MHRA’s Criminal Enforcement Unit is collaborating with social media companies to eliminate illegal listings and pursue criminal prosecutions. Penalties include up to two years in prison for those caught selling unlicensed products.
