Electra Lands Fixed-Wing Aircraft at Manhattan Heliport in Historic First
Aviation startup Electra says it has achieved a historic milestone: its hybrid-electric EL2 Ultra Short demonstrator successfully took off and landed at Downtown Skyport in Lower Manhattan on October 26, 2026. It is believed to be the first fixed-wing aircraft without vertical takeoff capability to operate from the heliport.
The two-seat EL2, nicknamed Goldfinch, uses Electra’s proprietary blown-lift technology with distributed electric propulsion to take off and land within just 150 feet. That distance fits comfortably within the heliport’s 62-by-62-foot landing pad on the East River waterfront. The aircraft’s hybrid-electric powertrain includes a Safran TG600 turbogenerator.
“Today we made aviation history in downtown Manhattan by landing a fixed-wing aircraft on a heliport,” said Marc Allen, CEO of Electra.
The demonstration is part of the company’s ongoing “Life Beyond Runways” series, which promotes its Direct Aviation concept: connecting passengers from city centers without relying on traditional runway infrastructure. Electra estimates the technology could save travelers up to 3 hours and 45 minutes on a trip from New York City to Boston.
Electra is working toward FAA certification of its nine-passenger EL9, with commercial service targeted for 2030. Designed for routes of 50 to 500 miles, the EL9 is part of the company’s broader push to make short-distance air travel more accessible. Electra is also an inaugural participant in the FAA’s advanced air mobility integration pilot program.
