Microsoft Authenticator App to Discontinue Password Support from August 2025

Microsoft has announced a major shift in its cybersecurity strategy. Starting August 1, 2025, the tech giant will discontinue password storage and autofill features in its popular Authenticator app. This decision comes in the wake of observing “a staggering 7,000 password attacks per second” in 2024, a figure that is more than double the rate from 2023.

Users who currently store passwords in Microsoft Authenticator are urged to export their data before August 1st. Failure to do so could result in permanent loss of access. Microsoft is advocating for users to switch to its Edge browser for password management. Alternatively, users are encouraged to migrate to dedicated password managers like Bitwarden, 1Password, or Google Password Manager.

This change is a component of Microsoft’s wider initiative towards a passwordless future. The company is focusing on technologies like passkeys, Windows Hello, and FIDO2-based authentication. While the password features are being phased out, the app will continue to offer multi-factor authentication services. Microsoft wants to assure users that passkeys will continue to be supported, but users must keep Authenticator enabled as their passkey provider.
