General Aviation’s Fatal Accident Rate for 2026: A Positive Trend
New data released by the General Aviation Joint Safety Committee (GAJSC) brings encouraging news for pilots and the entire aviation community. The fatal accident rate in general aviation for the fiscal year 2026 is trending positively, running significantly below the annual safety target set by the FAA and industry partners.
As per the GAJSC figures, the estimated GA fatal accident rate was at a mere 0.47 accidents per 100,000 flight hours as of January 2026. This is significantly below the annual target threshold of 0.91. This continues the momentum of FY 2025, which witnessed GA recording its lowest annual fatal accident rate in history at just 0.61 fatal accidents per 100,000 hours.
The GAJSC, a body that brings together the FAA and the broader general aviation community, employs a data-driven, consensus-based approach to analyze accident data and develop safety interventions targeting root causes. The committee tracks accidents on a monthly basis and by category to identify emerging risks.
Despite the positive trend, EAA GAJSC Co-Chair Sean Elliott urged caution, stating, “The reality is that we are still losing 250-plus lives each year in a GA aircraft. Our work is far from over.” Industry officials emphasized that continued vigilance, pilot training, and investment in safety technology are crucial to sustain and extend the downward trend into the future.
