Naples Airport in Florida has embarked on a significant modernization of its air traffic operations. The airport has implemented the Frequentis smartATIS system, an advanced automated platform that replaces the airport’s manual weather and airfield broadcasts.
This innovative system generates automatic audio broadcasts. It features real-time weather data sourced directly from the Airport Surface Observing System (ASOS). Air traffic controllers at Naples Airport can swiftly input crucial operational updates. These updates include runway configurations, taxiway closures, construction activity, and wildlife advisories. The system instantly compiles and broadcasts these updates to arriving and departing pilots.
The upgrade offers several key benefits for both pilots and controllers. Pilots must access the ATIS information before contacting the control tower. This requirement significantly reduces radio frequency congestion and ensures every pilot receives the same accurate, up-to-the-minute data. It also drastically reduces controller workload, allowing tower staff to concentrate on managing live aircraft operations instead of repeating routine information over the radio.
