Unintentional Leak Reveals Camera-Integrated AirPods with AI Vision by Apple
Apple, a company typically tight-lipped about its upcoming products, may have inadvertently given away details about one of its most awaited offerings this week. Developers delving into the release candidate for macOS Tahoe 26.7 stumbled upon a brief video hidden within the operating system’s code. This video provides the most detailed glimpse yet at the forthcoming camera-equipped AirPods, powered by Apple’s Visual Intelligence AI.
The 13-second video, initially brought to light by MacRumors and subsequently circulated online by developer Aaron Perris, depicts a user donning the new AirPods and aiming them at a physical book. The AI assistant from Apple identifies the object and offers to store it for future reference, all through a straightforward voice command. As per the code discovered in the same macOS update, the AirPods will issue a “Hair Detected” alert if the camera’s view is blocked.
Apple is keenly aware of privacy concerns. According to Mark Gurman from Bloomberg, the new AirPods have been engineered so that they cannot capture video or photos. Instead, they can only scan a user’s environment for AI analysis. Indicator lights will also be present to show when the camera is in use. Counterpoint Research’s industry analysts predict that the camera-integrated AirPods could be priced around $300, approximately $50 more than the current AirPods Pro. They could potentially account for 25 million units sold by 2027. Given the demo’s presence in macOS 26.7 RC, an official announcement is likely at Apple’s September iPhone event.
