Lufthansa Debuts Complimentary Starlink Wi-Fi on Inaugural Flight
In a significant advancement for aviation connectivity, Lufthansa Group has today, August 19, 2026, launched its first commercial flight equipped with SpaceX Starlink Wi-Fi. This service is available free of charge for passengers. The maiden flight was operated on a Lufthansa Airbus A320neo (registered D-AINM), marking the commencement of one of Europe’s most ambitious airline connectivity projects.
The innovative “Lufthansa Group Wi-Fi powered by Starlink” service employs low-Earth orbit satellite technology. This allows passengers to stream video, work in the cloud, and use other high-speed applications mid-flight, with speeds that are on par with or exceed a typical home broadband connection. This service is complimentary for all travel classes for passengers who are signed in with a Miles & More account or a free Travel ID.
By 2029, Lufthansa Group aims to implement Starlink across its entire fleet of approximately 850 aircraft. This fleet spans ten airlines, including SWISS, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, ITA Airways, Eurowings, and more. Chief Commercial Officer Dieter Vranckx has stated that this rollout is a critical component of the travel experience, emphasizing that connectivity is now as essential as seats and in-flight menus.
Lufthansa Group is now the largest European airline group to commit to full-fleet Starlink deployment, following earlier rollouts by United Airlines, Qatar Airways, and Hawaiian Airlines.
