Celebrating National Aviation Day: A Tribute to the Pioneers of Flight
Today, August 19, 2026, we celebrate National Aviation Day, a federal observance that pays tribute to the pioneers and achievements of human flight. This day coincides with the birthday of Orville Wright, one of the two brothers who invented the first successful powered aircraft. The tradition of observing this day annually has been upheld since President Franklin D. Roosevelt proclaimed it in 1939.
This year, National Aviation Day marks the commencement of National Aviation Week (August 19–25). This makes it an especially significant occasion for the aviation community. Across the country, a myriad of events are being organized, including:
- Fly-ins
- Air shows
- Museum open days
- Educational programs
One notable event is the annual National Aviation Day Fly-In hosted by the First Flight Society. This event will take place at Dare County Regional Airport (MQI) in Manteo, North Carolina, from 10 AM to 3 PM. This location is near the historic site where the Wright Brothers made their landmark first flight in 1903.
For general aviation enthusiasts, today is a golden opportunity to celebrate the community that keeps recreational flying alive. The aviation industry in the United States supports over 10 million jobs, spanning roles from pilots and aircraft mechanics to engineers and air traffic controllers. Whether you fly, build, or simply love everything aviation, August 19 is your day.
