Cathay Pacific Slashes Fuel Surcharges by 17% Amid Easing Jet Fuel Costs

International travelers have a reason to celebrate. Cathay Pacific Airways has announced a significant reduction in its passenger fuel surcharges. Effective from July 16, 2026, the surcharge has been slashed by approximately 17%. This marks the airline’s third consecutive cut in a few months, a response to the decreasing jet fuel prices as geopolitical tensions in the Middle East stabilize.

For long-haul flights between Hong Kong and key destinations including North America, Europe, the Southwest Pacific, the Middle East, and Africa, the surcharge has been reduced from HK$1,164 to HK$965 per sector. Short-haul surcharges have also seen a decrease, going from HK$290 to HK$241. Furthermore, routes to the South Asian subcontinent have dropped from HK$541 to HK$448.

It’s important to note that the surcharge is locked in at the booking date, not the travel date. This means that travelers who book today can secure the lower rate, regardless of any future fluctuations in fuel prices.

Despite the recent easing, jet fuel costs had roughly doubled since late February due to geopolitical escalation. They have since eased following an interim peace deal. Even with today’s welcome cut, long-haul surcharges remain approximately 70% above pre-conflict levels. Cathay Pacific has stated that it will continue reviewing surcharges every two weeks to capture jet fuel price movements in either direction.
