Tragic Plane Crash Near Virginia Airport Claims Life of Elderly Pilot
A 78-year-old Virginia man tragically lost his life on Tuesday morning when his single-engine, homebuilt aircraft crashed near Shannon Airport in Spotsylvania County, Fredericksburg. This incident marks one of the most sobering general aviation incidents of the week.
The aircraft, a Montana Coyote — a single-engine, two-seat amateur-built short takeoff and landing (STOL) plane — crashed at approximately 11:05 a.m. local time on July 14, 2026. The crash occurred during the approach phase of flight. The sole occupant and pilot, Rowland A. Babcock Jr., of Ruther Glen, Virginia, was pronounced dead from injuries sustained in the accident.
The plane came down in the parking lot of the Greenline Service Corporation, a John Deere tractor dealership located directly across the street from the airport on Tidewater Trail. Fortunately, the building itself was not struck, and no ground injuries were reported.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has confirmed the incident and both the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) have been notified. The NTSB is leading the investigation; the agency is currently listing the cause as “unknown circumstances” and is urging any witnesses to contact them directly at witness@ntsb.gov. An NTSB field investigator has been dispatched to examine the aircraft and document the scene.
The accident underscores the ongoing safety challenges facing amateur-built aircraft operations in general aviation, particularly during the critical approach and landing phases of flight. Investigators have not yet identified any contributing factors.
