Scalp Care: The Rising Star in the Beauty Industry
Scalp care has officially transitioned from a niche concern to a mainstream beauty necessity. This shift is supported by recent statistics. A new report from WWD reveals that over-the-counter (OTC) dandruff and hair loss solutions are gaining significant momentum. The scalp health category is now mainstream, with hair growth products witnessing a 9.8% growth in the U.S., resulting in sales of $896.6 million.
“The rise of skincare-inspired routines is directly benefiting scalp care,” states Anna Mayo, Vice President of NIQ’s Beauty Vertical. This change reflects the way consumers have traditionally cared for their facial skin. They are now applying the same rigorous approach of using serums, exfoliants, and targeted treatments to their scalp.
Major brands are striving to meet this growing demand. Head & Shoulders recently launched a new product, Glacier Mint Shampoo. This shampoo features menthol, which provides immediate itch relief and long-term results. Meanwhile, new-generation brands such as Jupiter (sulfate-free) and Vichy Dercos are establishing their presence in a market where the top three mass players still hold 75% of dandruff shampoo sales in the U.S.
This trend is part of a larger evolution in consumer attitudes towards hair health. As noted by dermatologist Dr. Jenny Liu from Minneapolis, “Healthy hair begins at the follicle, making scalp care crucial for density, strength, and overall quality.” Scalp serums, exfoliants, and overnight treatments are becoming daily essentials. Consequently, the global scalp care market is projected to surpass $28 billion by 2030.
