General Aviation Pilots Rally Against Starlink’s Exorbitant Price Increase

Thousands of general aviation pilots are voicing their discontent with SpaceX’s Starlink. The company’s drastic restructuring of its in-motion satellite internet plans in early 2026 has effectively priced most GA aircraft out of affordable in-flight connectivity.

Starlink has limited its standard Roam and Priority plans to a mere 100 mph (87 knots) ground speed. This is slower than the cruise speed of virtually every production piston and turboprop aircraft, including the widely-used Cessna 172 and Piper Cherokee. Pilots wishing to continue using in-flight internet are now compelled to subscribe to new aviation-specific tiers:

  • The Aviation 300MPH plan, priced at $250/month for a mere 20 GB of data
  • The Aviation 450MPH plan, which costs a staggering $1,000/month

This is a significant increase compared to the previous $50–$65/month Roam plans, which offered 100 GB of data.

Over 9,000 pilots have signed a Change.org petition demanding that Starlink reinstate its affordable roaming plans. The Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA) has also taken action, sending a formal letter to Elon Musk on March 9, 2026. Representing 400,000 pilots from more than 80 countries, AOPA Senior Vice President Jim Coon stated that the changes have “priced out the lion’s share of general aviation pilots.” These pilots relied on Starlink not as a luxury, but as an essential cockpit safety tool for real-time weather updates and communications.

As of late April 2026, SpaceX has yet to issue a formal response to AOPA. The 100 mph cap remains in place, leading pilots to describe the move as a “bait and switch,” especially those who have already invested in Starlink Mini hardware and permanent cockpit installations.
