NORAD Sends a Strong Message to GA Pilots for July 4 ‘Freedom 250’ Celebrations

As millions of Americans gear up to celebrate the nation’s historic 250th birthday, the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) sends a clear message to every general aviation pilot across the country: “Know before you fly.”

NORAD has issued a comprehensive advisory, urging all private and commercial aviators to thoroughly review Temporary Flight Restrictions (TFRs) and FAA Notices to Airmen (NOTAMs) before each takeoff during the “Freedom 250” celebrations. The officials have warned that any accidental airspace violation could lead to military interception or severe legal penalties.

“We are expecting an unprecedented volume of military and civil air activity,” the NORAD advisory stated. “Aviators must check NOTAMs frequently, as restrictions can be implemented or modified with very little notice.” General aviation pilots flying under Visual Flight Rules (VFR) are strongly advised to avoid metropolitan hubs unless absolutely necessary.

In the Washington, D.C. area, Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) will suspend all flight operations from noon to 7:00 PM on July 4. This is to accommodate a massive military flyover, an 850,000-shell fireworks display, and presidential appearances. The aerial display will feature the Thunderbirds, Blue Angels, an F-22 Raptor Demo Team, and all three Air Force bomber types.

U.S. Air Force Gen. Gregory M. Guillot, commander of NORAD and U.S. Northern Command, made it clear: “The freedom to fly safely depends on every member of the aviation community doing their part.” In addition, hundreds of smaller TFRs are expected to appear over major cities, stadiums, and historic sites nationwide.
