Record-Breaking July 4th Travel: 72M Americans Take to the Road
This Independence Day weekend is shaping up to be one of the busiest travel periods in recent American history. According to AAA, an estimated 72.2 million Americans are expected to travel between June 28 and July 6, 2026. This marks a 2.4% increase compared to the same period last year.
The vast majority of these travelers, approximately 61.6 million, are hitting the road by car. Air travel is also experiencing a surge, with about 5.84 million passengers expected to fly. This is despite domestic airfare averaging a hefty $810 — a 4% increase year over year.
Hotel demand is skyrocketing alongside travel volumes. New booking data from HotelPlanner reveals that hotel reservations for the July 4 weekend are up a staggering 48% over last year. Average nightly rates have also seen a significant climb, with a 30% increase year over year.
The most in-demand destinations include:
- Las Vegas
- San Diego
- Chicago
- Washington D.C.
- Honolulu
- Nashville
- New Orleans
- Boston
- Orlando
On Priceline, Washington D.C. leads hotel search surges at +79%, followed by Virginia Beach (+68%) and Nashville (+30%).
The surge in travel is also being fueled by America’s 250th anniversary (America250) celebrations. Hilton’s 2026 Trends Report notes that 71% of Americans plan to drive to their next vacation as patriotic events peak nationwide this July. Industry experts advise travelers to book early and remain flexible, warning that limited availability and rising prices will define the holiday weekend.
