Global Aviation Pilots Protest Against SpaceX Starlink’s Sudden Price Surge
Thousands of general aviation pilots worldwide are pushing back hard against SpaceX’s Starlink. The satellite internet company has unexpectedly restructured its in-motion service plans, effectively pricing most GA pilots out of affordable in-flight connectivity.
In early 2026, Starlink imposed a hard 100 mph (87-knot) ground speed cap on all standard Roam and Priority plans — which had previously been used by GA pilots for about $50–$65 per month. Since virtually every general aviation aircraft exceeds that speed in cruise, pilots are now being pushed into expensive new aviation-specific tiers: the Aviation 300MPH plan at $250/month (20 GB data included) or the Aviation 450MPH plan at $1,000/month (also 20 GB), with steep overage charges on top.
The backlash was swift and organized. A Change.org petition has amassed over 9,000 signatures from pilots calling on Starlink to reinstate affordable roaming options. The Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA) and the International Council of Aircraft Owner and Pilot Associations — representing 400,000 pilots from more than 80 countries — sent a joint letter directly to SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, warning that the price hike would force large numbers of pilots to cancel subscriptions and compromise in-flight safety tools.
“A large number of general aviation operators across the globe have used Starlink as a safety-enhancing tool, and it is unfortunate that the company has now priced out the lion’s share of general aviation pilots,” said Jim Coon, AOPA Senior Vice President of Government Affairs. As of late June 2026, SpaceX has not issued a formal response to AOPA’s letter, and the petition continues to grow.
