Robert Sumwalt: 2026 Wright Brothers Trophy Recipient and Aviation Safety Icon

The National Aeronautic Association (NAA) has bestowed the 2026 Wright Brothers Memorial Trophy — a top honor in American aviation — upon Robert Sumwalt, former Chairman of the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB).

Sumwalt’s recognition comes as a result of his outstanding contributions over more than four decades in various roles, including:

  • Commercial airline pilot
  • Safety researcher
  • Flight instructor
  • Federal leader

His illustrious career includes 24 years of airline flying and over 14,000 flight hours. He also made significant strides in human factors research with NASA’s Aviation Safety Reporting System. Sumwalt was appointed to the NTSB in 2006, where he served as its 14th Chairman under multiple presidential administrations until his retirement from federal service in 2021. He currently holds the position of Executive Director at the Boeing Center for Aviation and Aerospace Safety at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.

“To be counted among the pioneers and leaders who have received the Wright Brothers Memorial Trophy is the honor of a lifetime,” said Sumwalt.

The trophy will be formally presented at the Aero Club of Washington’s Annual Wright Memorial Dinner on December 17, 2026, in Washington, D.C.

The Wright Brothers Memorial Trophy is a prestigious annual award given to a living American whose public service contributions have made a lasting impact on U.S. aviation.
