High Flying Hangars Initiates First Hangar Development at KFDK in Two Decades

High Flying Hangars has officially commenced a significant 11.45-acre hangar development at Frederick Municipal Airport (KFDK) in Maryland — marking the first new hangar construction at the airport in over 20 years. The groundbreaking ceremony took place on June 18, 2026, with notable attendees including Frederick City Mayor Michael O’Connor, Airport Manager Andrew Moore, and High Flying Hangars CEO Kenny Hinkes, in addition to other local officials and the CEO of Warner Construction, the general contractor for the project.

The project is set to be executed in two phases. Phase 1 will deliver 44 hangars, while Phase 2 is expected to add approximately 34 more. The hangars will vary in size from 1,245 sq ft to 8,000 sq ft. All units will feature fully insulated American-made steel construction, polished concrete floors, LED lighting, high-speed internet, and infrared heating. Larger units will also include in-unit bathrooms and in-floor drainage. Phase 1 will also see the construction of a Hangar Club clubhouse, equipped with a commercial kitchen, meeting room, patio, and a sky deck that provides a panoramic view of the flight line.

This development comes in response to a critical and growing shortage of hangar space in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. Officials have noted that the demand for hangars in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area continues to outstrip supply. The hangars are slated for completion in Q4 of 2026. Frederick Municipal Airport serves both general and business aviation traffic across the Maryland region and the northern D.C. metro area.
