Tim McClung: A Three-Decade Legacy in Iowa Aviation Comes to a Close

Tim McClung, the esteemed Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) Aviation Director, has officially retired, marking the end of an illustrious aviation career that spanned over 30 years. McClung, who joined the Iowa DOT in 2003 and ascended to the position of Aviation Director in 2021, formally ended his service on June 19, 2026.

Throughout his tenure, McClung was instrumental in shaping Iowa’s aviation policy, planning, legislative engagement, and air service development. He was a key player in incorporating Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) into Iowa’s airspace and managed the administration of more than $160 million in aviation funding in addition to regular FAA Airport Improvement Program (AIP) grants. His responsibilities also included overseeing aviation funding programs, public-use airport certification, and aircraft registration across the state.

As a licensed commercial pilot with a seaplane rating and an unmanned aircraft pilot credential, McClung brought a wealth of experience to the role. His background in airport and FBO management further enriched his contributions. He is succeeded by Shane Wright, who stepped into the Aviation Director role on May 18, 2026. Wright brings with him nearly two decades of experience in aviation, including commercial airport management, Part 139 airport operations, and fixed-base operations, along with commercial pilot ratings in instrument and multi-engine aircraft.

“The Iowa DOT’s Aviation Team is strong, knowledgeable, and passionate about their mission,” McClung said upon his retirement. The aviation community in Iowa is celebrating his decades of dedicated service.
