SpaceX Makes Record-Breaking $60 Billion Acquisition of AI Coding Leader, Cursor
Just days after orchestrating the largest IPO in stock market history and raising a whopping $75 billion, Elon Musk’s SpaceX has made a groundbreaking move in the field of AI. The company announced the acquisition of Anysphere, the San Francisco-based startup behind the AI coding sensation, Cursor. This all-stock deal, valued at an unprecedented $60 billion, was confirmed via a securities filing on June 16, 2026, making it the largest acquisition of a venture-backed startup on record.
Cursor, a brainchild of MIT graduates including CEO Michael Truell, has been a pioneer in the “vibe coding” trend. This innovative approach uses AI to autonomously generate software with minimal human input. Despite amassing roughly $2.6 billion in annualized B2B revenue, the company remained unprofitable due to its heavy reliance on AI APIs from Anthropic and OpenAI. However, with the acquisition and access to SpaceX’s xAI division and the Colossus supercomputing facility in Memphis, Tennessee, the financial dynamics could see a significant shift.

“We are thrilled to announce that SpaceX has exercised their option to acquire Cursor in an all-stock transaction. Our goal is to build the world’s most useful AI models,” stated Cursor CEO Michael Truell. Following this announcement, SpaceX shares surged over 8%, pushing the company’s market cap above a staggering $2.7 trillion. The deal is expected to close in Q3 2026, pending regulatory approval.
