NORAD Issues Stern Warning Following 15 TFR Violations Over NY/NJ
A sudden increase in unauthorized airspace incursions over New York and New Jersey has led to a stern warning from the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD). NORAD confirmed that F-16 fighter jets intercepted over a dozen general aviation (GA) aircraft. These aircraft violated Temporary Flight Restrictions (TFRs) during the first two weeks of June 2026.
NORAD reported a total of 15 unauthorized incursions into FAA-issued TFR airspace near Bedminster, New Jersey. Many of these violations were connected to increased presidential security during VIP movements from June 5 through June 8. A confirmed intercept took place near Keansburg, New Jersey, on June 6 at approximately 1:40 p.m. EDT. An F-16 deployed flares to capture the errant pilot’s attention before safely escorting the aircraft out of the restricted airspace.
“Most TFR violations are preventable and can be avoided through thorough preflight planning,” said Royal Canadian Air Force Major-General David Moar, Director of NORAD Operations. “Reviewing NOTAMs and checking for active TFRs before every flight are essential responsibilities for all pilots.”
NORAD stressed that even accidental entry into restricted airspace can trigger a full military response and disrupt the National Airspace System. Pilots who find themselves intercepted are instructed to immediately:
- Tune to emergency frequency 121.5 or 243.0
- Reverse course until further instructions are received
Violations can result in FAA enforcement actions, flight disruptions, and significant air traffic impacts.
