FIFA World Cup 2026: Miami Leads in Hotel Bookings Despite Falling Short of Projections
As the FIFA World Cup 2026 is about to commence, Miami is gearing up to host seven prominent matches, including a quarterfinal and the Bronze Final on July 18 at Hard Rock Stadium. Despite the city’s status as the tournament’s top-performing U.S. host market, it is not exempt from the booking shortfalls affecting North American host cities.
Reports from the American Hotel & Lodging Association (AHLA) reveal that nearly 80% of hotel bookings across U.S. host markets are falling short of initial forecasts. Miami, however, shines as the strongest performer, with 55% of respondents reporting booking pace ahead of expectations. Nevertheless, 45% of its hotels are still anticipating a shortfall. Factors such as diminished international travel confidence, U.S. visa delays, geopolitical instability, and escalating inflation are believed to be hindering international fan arrivals.
Despite these hurdles, Miami’s tourism ecosystem is rallying. Hotels are introducing bundled packages that combine World Cup tickets with cultural tours and boat excursions. The official FIFA Fan Festival at Bayfront Park, scheduled to run from June 13 to July 5, will transform 436,000 square feet of downtown waterfront into a free public celebration, accommodating up to 30,000 visitors per day. Experts from Florida International University suggest that the long-term value lies in repositioning Miami as a global sports destination beyond the tournament. The global economic impact of the tournament across all host cities is projected to generate more than $11 billion in direct tourism revenue.
