Musk’s Terafab: A $55B Semiconductor Venture Takes Spotlight at ASML Event

Elon Musk’s ambitious semiconductor moonshot, Terafab, is gaining serious industry momentum. On June 6, chip-equipment giant ASML Holding NV confirmed that Musk will virtually attend the company’s closed-door annual technology conference (scheduled for June 11–12) to present his vision for the project — a project that ASML’s leadership has officially described as a “serious endeavor.”

Terafab, a SpaceX-Tesla joint venture unveiled in March 2026, is designed to produce cutting-edge semiconductors for robotics, artificial intelligence, and space-based data centers. The project recently confirmed plans for a chip factory in Grimes County, Texas, with an estimated construction cost of at least $55 billion. Its ultimate ambition is to support a terawatt of computing power per year, a scale that would dwarf existing semiconductor fabs.

ASML, the world’s sole manufacturer of extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography machines — the critical equipment needed to print the smallest transistors on advanced chips — holds a pivotal role in whether Terafab can succeed. Every leading-edge fab, from TSMC to Samsung to Intel, depends on ASML hardware.

However, the invitation has not been without controversy. According to Dutch outlet Eindhovens Dagblad, some ASML employees have posted critical reactions on internal channels, with several reportedly considering boycotting the event over Musk’s political views. ASML confirmed the backlash but stood by the invitation, noting Musk is now part of “the broader ecosystem of our industry.”
