FIFA World Cup 2026 Sparks Unprecedented $8.1B Tourism Boom in North America

As the FIFA World Cup 2026 gears up for its kick-off on June 12 in Los Angeles, North America prepares for a historic surge in tourism. This tournament, the first to be co-hosted by three nations – the United States, Canada, and Mexico, is anticipated to attract 1.2 million international visitors to the 11 U.S. host cities alone.

These cities include Atlanta, Boston, Dallas, Miami, New York/New Jersey, and Seattle. A total of 78 matches will be played across the country, with an additional 26 matches in Mexico and Canada. The grand finale is scheduled for MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, on July 19.

A study by Expedia Group and PredictHQ forecasts that total traveler spending will exceed $8.1 billion across host markets from June to August. This figure represents an increase of approximately $750 million compared to the previous year. Hotels in host cities are expecting near-full occupancy, while restaurants, entertainment venues, airlines, and local businesses are all vying for a slice of the burgeoning sports tourism economy.

Travel agencies have also noted a spike in demand for multi-city cross-border travel packages. Fans are planning to attend matches in more than one country during a single trip, further boosting the tourism sector.

Beyond the immediate economic benefits, experts predict that the World Cup will have a lasting impact on host cities. It will enhance their international visibility, bolster tourism infrastructure, and reposition North America as a leading global leisure and experiential travel destination for the foreseeable future.
