Aviation Pilots Rally Against Starlink Over Sudden Price Surges
General aviation pilots are voicing their discontent towards SpaceX’s Starlink following the company’s sudden restructuring of its in-motion internet service. This change has effectively priced out most GA aircraft operators. The contentious adjustment limits standard Roam and Priority plans to a 100 mph ground speed, compelling pilots to opt for costly aviation-specific tiers that demand a higher price for less data.
The newly introduced structure presents the Aviation 300MPH plan at a cost of $250 per month, offering a mere 20 GB of data. In contrast, the Aviation 450MPH plan is priced at a whopping $1,000 per month, with the same data allowance. In the past, pilots had the option to choose standard roaming plans that ranged from $50-$165 monthly, providing higher data limits.
A Change.org petition against these changes has already amassed over 4,000 signatures. Additionally, AOPA has dispatched a formal letter to SpaceX, expressing their concern that these price hikes will exclude the majority of GA pilots.
Pilots argue that Starlink connectivity has become a crucial element for safety, offering real-time weather updates, flight planning information, and communication capabilities—especially in remote areas with limited ground-based infrastructure. Many pilots feel that this sudden change, implemented without grandfathering existing users, is a “bait and switch” tactic that undermines the aviation safety improvements they had integrated into their operations.
